About Us

Founded by James I. Lewis, Jr., the Youth Empowerment Association (YEA) began as a grassroots, unincorporated non-profit organization in 2008. The Youth Empowerment Association was founded on the premises of developing and supporting underprivileged youth in Lenoir County, NC and the surrounding communities through innovative youth programs and assistance means for the educational, social, and emotional development of underprivileged youth. In regard to past events, the Youth Empowerment Association has put on Wii tournaments for youth aged 5-18 years old in order to promote positive activities for all youth in rural Lenoir County and the surrounding communities. YEA has also provided Christmas and Back-to-School give-a-ways to underprivileged youth in the local community. In addition to this, YEA has also provided tutoring services and youth outings to youth from low-income families.

Our Goals

In the near future, the Youth Empowerment Association plans to launch an afterschool program for underprivileged and at-risk youth in Lenoir County, NC and the surrounding communities that focuses on using research-based fine arts educational methods to improve his academic performance. YEA also plans to start a Headstart program for youth aged 3 to 4 within the next three years of operation. Finally, YEA would like to offer educational scholarships to underprivileged youth pursuing further education at community and/or four-year colleges and universities.

Our Mission

Our main focus is on empowering the underprivileged youth of our community by equipping them with the necessary educational, social and life skills that will enable them to be an asset to society. Although our main focus is on the youth, we also provide financial assistance to low-income adults that have a desire to receive a post-secondary education. In the near future, we plan to expand the scope of our organization by assisting low-income families in the acquisition of their essential needs to improve their quality of life and their chances of defying the odds. We also plan to launch “Reaping A Harvest For the Holidays”, a program that will provide low-income and underprivileged families with wholesome meals and gifts throughout the holiday season.
